The theory of the Uncanny and philosophical debates surrounding the idea of the
Other are fundamental to my art practice as my work employs notions of the uncanny
to challenge universally accepted norms such as the gender binary and fantasy versus reality. Drawing inspiration from research into historical periods and the fantasies I construct surrounding identities and animal mythology based on crypto zoology, I question the ideas relating to identity as it is based upon the notion of the other. I am interested in paradoxical outcomes and in the cognitive dissonance caused by presenting contradictory ideas simultaneously. The uncanny space created where opposing ideas overlap is where I situate my work. My work operates by attempting to create an uncanny experience for the viewer being aware at the same time that the concept of an uncanny experience is highly subjective. I am currently making work surrounding the idea of the double. I am interested in questioning the notion of authenticity both in terms of identity and in terms of a work of art.
